SAN FRANCISCO -- A Northern California school district's attempt to stop a child from wearing socks with a picture of a cartoon tiger to class is turning out to be costly. The Napa Valley Unified School District will have to pay at least $95,000 in lawyers' fees under a settlement with five families who sued the school over its dress code. The deal was announced Thursday. The parents went to court after a student was disciplined for wearing socks with the cartoon character Tigger on the first day of school last year. The district's superintendent said settlement money is for the plaintiffs' lawyers -- the district is also on the hook to pay the lawyers it hired."We made an economic decision not to continue spending limited district resources defending a lawsuit," superintendent John Glaser told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I don't know what the total of those fees is," Glaser said. "I'm afraid to even estimate."The settlement also says Redwood Middle School may no longer require students to wear only solid-color clothing. The newspaper reported that any student disciplined for violating the policy during the last six years may also have that record expunged, according to the settlement.Parents may opt out of any future uniform requirement at the school, per the settlement, the newspaper said. "Wow, I think it's, like, really great that we've got it finally settled," Toni Kay Scott, 14, who wore the controversial socks with the Winnie the Pooh on the first day of school last year, told the newspaper. "It's pretty awesome." Sign Up For Breaking News E-mail AlertsCopyright 2007 by NBC11.com. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
